One of the more highly celebrated players of his era, “Sir” Hugh Duffy holds the record for the highest single-season batting average in history, hitting .440 in 1894. In addition to his .440 batting average that season, Duffy hit 18 home runs and drove in 145 RBI, winning baseball’s Triple Crown. Duffy won the home run title again in 1897 with 11. A New England native, Duffy originally turned down more money from Boston to play for his idol, Cap Anson, with the White Stockings. Duffy hit over .300 nine times in his career. He managed in the minors for 11 seasons, mostly for the Providence Grays and the Portland Duffs in the New England League. Duffy capped off his career as a Red Sox coach in the 1930s, tutoring a player he described as “the best hitter I ever saw”; that hitter was Ted Williams. Hugh Duffy was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1945.
