Although modern baseball historians consider Richard “Rube” Marquard a marginal Hall of Famer, no one disputes that he was a dominant pitcher. He won 20 or more games on three occasions, and played on five pennant-winning teams. There are, however, players who are not in the Hall of Fame who have records as good as or better than Marquard’s. He did win 19 games in a row in 1912, which is a great feat. Rube also led the league with his 26 wins that year. His 1,593 career strikeouts ranked him third in MLB history among southpaws and remained a National League record until 1942. Marquard both played and managed in the minor leagues through the 1933 season, and retired at the age of 46. He also performed in vaudeville with Blossom Seeley, whom he married in 1913 (they divorced in 1920). Rube Marquard was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1971.
