Possibly the greatest second baseman of all time, Eddie Collins was a superstar in the true sense of the word. Outstanding both offensively and defensively, he holds the records for a second baseman in career games (2,650), assists (7,630), and total chances (14,591). With his 3,315 career hits and .333 batting average, he helped the A’s to four pennants and three championships. Collins won two more pennants with the White Sox in 1917 and 1919. He was the first player in history to steal 80 bases in a season. After his playing days, he coached for the A’s in 1931 and 1932. He then became general manager of the Boston Red Sox from 1933 to 1947, signing Ted Williams during his tenure. Eddie Collins was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1939.
