“Big Ed” Walsh was the early gold standard for pitchers. The numbers from his 13 seasons with the White Sox are just stunning. In 1908 he pitched 464 innings (still an American League record) with an amazing 1.42 ERA and posted a 40-win season. For four seasons, Walsh led the league in innings pitched, topping 400 twice and pitching 393 once. In 1907 and 1910 he led the league in ERA, and collected six sub-2.00 seasons overall. He struck out 200-plus batters five times and led the league in strikeouts twice. Walsh threw his only no-hitter against Boston in 1911. The innings took their toll on him, however, and after 4 years of less than 100 innings pitched, he was released in 1916. He tried a comeback with the Braves but only lasted 18 innings. Walsh is still baseball’s all-time career leader in ERA at 1.82. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1946.
