Volumes could be written about the strange career of George “Rube” Waddell. One of the game’s first power pitchers; he won the American League Pitching Triple Crown in 1905 and led the league in ERA that year with 1.48. He also led the National League in ERA in 1900 with 2.37. Waddell ranks among the top 20 pitchers of all time in several categories. On the other side of the coin, he was an alcoholic, suffered from delusions, and sometimes behaved erratically. His leaving the mound to chase fire trucks is a myth, but he did fight with teammates, managers, and fans, and sometimes disappeared for days. When all is said and done, however, he was a very gifted pitcher. Waddell died at age 37 from tuberculosis. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1946.
