Product Description

PLAYER: Johnny Bates

TEAM: Boston Doves

LEAGUE: National League

BACK: Blank (Proof)

An extraordinarily unique example of Boston Doves outfielder Johnny Bates. The card represents one of the great rarities within the T206 collection, the “proof”. These proofs are not made available often and this example should rightfully be considered far more special than a traditional blank back T206, which is a genuine rarity in its own right.

A decent outfielder, Johnny Bates played both full-time and part-time for nine seasons in the majors. His best year was 1911, when he batted .292 and stole 33 bases. He also placed second in the league that year with 103 walks, and his on-base percentage of .415 was good for third in the league. Bates hit 6 homers in 1906 and 6 again in 1913, not bad for the dead-ball era. Considered a base-stealing threat, he swiped a total of 187 bases over his MLB career. After a short tour in the Federal League, he played four seasons in the minors for five teams in three different leagues. He retired in 1918 at age 35 with a .297 batting average in 1,225 minor league at bats.
