Merle “Doc” Adkins was 29 when he began his pro career, playing in both the majors and minors as a rookie in 1902. Adkins pitched just 20 innings in 4 games for the Americans that year, and came back in 1903 to pitch only seven innings in 2 games for the Highlanders. He was a star in the minors, however, pitching from 1903 through 1912 for the Baltimore Orioles. He won 20 or more games four times. His best year was 1908, when he went 29–12, led the tough Eastern League in wins, and helped the Orioles win their first pennant. Adkins attended medical school while with the Orioles and became an M.D. in 1907. After he retired in 1914 with a 165–111 minor league record, Doc became a successful scout, discovering Ernie Shore. He later became a well-known doctor in Durham.
